FLORIDA YMCA YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT

Since 1936, YMCA Youth In Government, or “YIG” for short, has given students around the country the opportunity to serve as part of a youth-run, youth-led model government process. The Florida YMCA Youth In Government program was founded in 1957, and for more than 56 years our delegates have been actively engaged with the issues that impact their families, schools, YMCAs, and communities.

HEALTHY COMMUNITIES INITIATIVES

Our Healthier Communities Initiatives (HCI) are built on the concept that local communities can work together to provide healthy choices and support the pursuit of healthy lifestyles. Ys across the country work in collaboration with community leaders to change policies and physical surroundings to bring healthy living within reach of all people.

SAFETY AROUND WATER

Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The YMCA’s Safety Around Water (SAW) program can help you make sure they learn essential water safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely. Drowning can happen nearly anywhere with standing water. But, as a parent or caregiver, you can’t keep your children sidelined. You need to equip them with the tools they need to be confident in and around water so they don’t lose out on the health benefits of exercise, the opportunities to bond with family and friends and the sense of accomplishment when they learn new skills.

Y READS!

YMCA Reads! provides kindergarten through third grade students with the intensive reading instruction they need to succeed. YMCA READS! students are referred by teachers to work with staff and mentors in small groups during two one-hour individualized sessions per week. We continuously measure reading skills using both i-Ready diagnostic tests and informal assessments to provide targeted instruction and track the results of the program. Overall, 100% of students in the program see quantifiable progress in their reading skills!
