Student YMCA

Programs

In 1957, the Florida YMCA Youth in Government program was established, and the first Florida YMCA State Assembly was held December 6-8, 1957 in Tallahassee, Florida. Since then, the Youth in Government program has sought to be a youth-run, youth-led model government program serving students across Florida. Through hands-on experience, students simulate various roles within state government, including serving as legislators, lawyers, lobbyists, and members of the executive branch. Participants draft bills, debate issues, and run model legislative sessions, preparing them for civic participation and leadership roles in their communities. The program emphasizes values such as responsibility, respect, and active citizenship, fostering the development of critical thinking, public speaking, and collaborative skills.
